Step 1: Your Transfer

Where are you now, and where are you going?

How the Transfer Portal Affects Your NIL Deals

The NCAA transfer portal has transformed college sports, but it also creates complex NIL compliance questions. When you transfer, your NIL obligations don't automatically follow you — some deals transfer, some terminate, and some require renegotiation.

What transfers: Social media endorsements, content creation deals, equity/ownership, and some autograph deals (if your new school allows them).

What doesn't transfer: School/athletic department NIL deals, local business partnerships, and appearance deals that are too far from your new location.

Tax implications: Transferring across state lines can trigger jock tax obligations. Some states have no income tax (Texas, Florida), while others have high rates (California, New York).
